Lent day 35: The Thirteenth Station –  Jesus is taken down from the Cross and placed in the arms of His Mother

We adore Thee, O Christ, and we praise Thee, because by Thy holy cross Thou hast redeemed the world.

Meditation: Consider that Our Lord having expired, two of His disciples, Joseph and Nicodemus, took Him down from the cross and placed Him in the arms of His afflicted Mother, who received Him with unutterable tenderness and pressed Him to her bosom.

Prayer: O Mother of Sorrow, for the love of this Son, accept me for thy servant, and pray to Him for me. And Thou, my Redeemer, since Thou hast died for me, permit me to love Thee; for I wish but Thee, my Jesus, and I repent out ever having offended Thee. Never permit me to offend Thee again. Grant that I may love Thee always, and then do with me what Thou wilt.

Our Father. Hail Mary. Glory Be.

Lord Jesus, crucified, have mercy on us!

I have tried to imagine so many times what this would feel like. I’ve put myself in a place holding some dear love or another but I will never really be able to know just how much sorrow and love Our Lady felt for her crucified Son. At this moment, she experiences the sixth of seven swords to pierce her heart. Her Divine Son is dead and His mission achieved. What triumphant joy with such bitter anguish.

Whenever I think of going to Our Lady for something, I always picture her here, at the foot of the cross, holding Jesus to herself. Usually I can’t actually ask her for what I wanted because it’s so banal next to this. Sometimes, however, it is urgent enough to ask anyway, and I know she will intercede for me. It is such a joy to have so perfect a mother.

Let me mingle tears with thee, Morning Him Who mourned for me, All the days that I may live.
